Christmas in Sri Lanka: Top Places to Visit and Things to Do in 2026

The weather in Sri Lanka at Christmastime makes it an ideal period to visit, with the rainy season having come to an end, and a cooler, breezy disposition taking over most of the island. Although Buddhism is the predominant religion in Sri Lanka, the Christmas season is widely celebrated and enjoyed across the country, by Christians and non-Christians alike. Hence, apart from the usual peak-season touristy activities that you can indulge in, spending Christmas in Sri Lanka also means being able to enjoy and partake in the cheerful vibe wherever you go. It is a wonderful intermingling of cultures and traditions, and a unique mix of experiencing the festive spirit in a tropical backdrop.

Christmas Celebrations in Sri Lanka

Christmas celebration in Colombo is a vibe. Each year, the city’s top hotels outdo themselves in terms of Christmas decorations, often taking on different themes and colour palettes, making them a sight to behold. We definitely recommend an evening of hotel-hopping, to take in all the sprinkles and sparkles of the season – and to indulge in some seasonal treats while you’re at it. Malls, streets, and shops, too, come alive with festive lights and eye-catching decorations. Restaurants and cafés dish out mouth-watering seasonal menus, and the tradition of sharing rich cake (Christmas cake), love cake, and breudhers between homes takes over. Amidst these, you’re also likely to come across local delicacies such as kavum, kokis, mung kavum, aasmi, and the likes, doing the rounds and available to indulge in. It’s a feast for the eyes, ears, and taste buds.

Keep an eye out for pop-up Christmas markets organised by different societies and charitable organisations around the city. They’re fantastic spots to get your hands on beautiful handicrafts, unique Christmas decorations, locally-produced food and beverage items, festive nibbles, and much more. Most hotels and establishments also organise carol evenings, with performances by some of the city’s most established musicians and choirs. These events certainly set the tone for the season, and are worth taking an evening off to experience and relish.

A little north of Colombo, Negombo – or ‘Little Rome’, as they call it, due to the presence of over 25 Catholic churches in the city – is completely abuzz during the season. Decked up and chiming carols out, the city truly gives you the Christmas feels. Most Sri Lankan Christians attend midnight mass on Christmas Eve. There are Christmas morning services as well, at varying times. So, if you’re looking to attend a Christmas service, check ahead with your nearest church. Negombo is also a great stop for good bargains. So, if you’re spending some time in the area, be sure to tick a few things off Santa’s list.

Best Places to Spend Christmas in Sri Lanka

As you would imagine, if you’re keen to get right into the spirit of things, Colombo or Negombo would be the best options to get the complete Sri Lankan Christmas experience. Befriend any local family while you’re here, and you’re likely to get spoilt rotten with typical Sri Lankan hospitality, lavish meals, and delicious sweet meats.

However, if you’re looking for a quieter alternative, Kandy – in the central hills – would be a good option. While the Christmas spirit does linger in the air, it is comparatively quieter during the season, and one can focus more on sightseeing, and the cultural elements of the city, including the Temple of the Tooth Relic, and other preserved monuments within this UNESCO World Heritage Site city. Since the weather in Sri Lanka at Christmas is generally quite well-behaved, you could also do a tour of the other UNESCO World Heritage Sites within the Cultural Triangle, which includes Kandy, Sigiriya, Dambulla Cave Temples, Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa.

If you’re looking for something moderate, with a balance between tourism and Christmas celebrations, Galle might be a good option. While hotels and restaurants in the city, at the Galle Fort, and further around the south coast do engage in and organise Christmas celebrations, the coastal vibe does still remain, too, allowing you to escape the hustle and bustle of it all on one of the many beautiful beaches along the coastline.

Best Way to Go Around Sri Lanka During Christmas

Given how busy the cities and suburbs (particularly around Colombo and Negombo) can be during the Christmas season, and all the festivities available to experience and enjoy, it would be best to hire a vehicle while you visit Sri Lanka. In fact, it would be even more prudent to hire a vehicle with a local chauffeur, as they would know the best routes to take to avoid the seasonal rush, and would also leave the hassle of having to find parking out of the equation, as roads and parking facilities would be at their busiest.

Kings Rent-a-Car offers a reliable fleet of vehicles from saloon cars to SUVs and 4WDs at highly competitive rates. While we do facilitate you to rent a car in Sri Lanka without a driver, Colombo, in particular, tends to be busier to navigate during the season. Hence, we also provide the option of renting with a chauffeur, for added safety and convenience. Our five-star service also includes add-on options of child/infant car seats, jumper cables, first aid kits and GPS-enabled tablets.

Visit Kings Rent-a-Car online for rates and options, or WhatsApp us on +94 77 773 9492 for information and inquiries. We recommend booking ahead to avoid disappointment during the Christmas season.
